UCI’s graduate program in philosophy, ranked among the top twenty five in the United States, includes two complementary units: the Department of Philosophy in the School of Humanities and the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science in the School of Social Sciences. The Philosophy Department is renowned for expertise in a wide range of fields. Particular strengths include the history of philosophy, especially the medieval and early modern periods, and the Continental tradition extending from Kant through Nietzsche and Husserl to twentieth-century existentialism. As the study of great thinkers of the past gives one perspective on today’s philosophical debates, so the study of today’s philosophical debates gives one insight into great thinkers of the past. Contemporary work in metaphysics and epistemology, philosophy of mind, moral and political philosophy accordingly forms an integral part of the Philosophy program.
