About the Event

The Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center is delighted to welcome Prof. Jessica Wiskus and Prof. Tone Roald to Duquesne University for a two-day seminar on phenomenology and aesthetics on March 12th and 13th, 2020.

Prof. Wiskus of Duquesne University is a prominent philosopher of art and music with special interests in Merleau-Ponty, Aristotle, and Augustine; and Prof. Roald of the University of Copenhagen is an accomplished psychologist whose research combines empirical-qualitative and theoretical approaches to understanding the experience of art.

Prof. Wiskus will present a seminar on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. on “Impressionist Painting and the Temporal Structure of Nostalgia” and Prof. Roald will present a seminar on Friday morning at 10 a.m. on “Aesthetic Experience: Investigations in Phenomenological Psychology”. On Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. Profs. Wiskus and Roald will jointly lead an experiential exercise in phenomenological reflection on paintings by Monet and Cezanne.

All events will be held in the Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center in the Gumberg Library.

The Silverman Center warmly invites graduate students, faculty, and professionals in the realms especially of philosophy, psychology, psychiatry, communication studies, theology and religious studies, and beyond to participate in the seminar, which is free of charge.
