Husserl and the Phenomenological Tradition

Husserl and the Phenomenological Tradition
The University of Guelph
Guelph, Ontario, Canada
13 – 15 April 2014

The Philosophy Department of the University of Guelph, a centre for research in phenomenology in Canada, is pleased to welcome prominent Husserl scholars and phenomenologists from across North America and Europe to this academic celebration of Husserl and the Phenomenological Tradition. Each day of this three-day event will open with an address by a keynote speaker, each of whom will conclude that day by leading a workshop. Our other speakers, including young scholars as well as established experts in the field, will be presenting their own current research in a series of separate papers throughout each day. In order to foster the spirit of collaboration that inspired the early phenomenologists, there will be no concurrent sections: We shall be one group of phenomenologists working together on the same problems and materials for three days, and we expect prominent scholars not listed on the program to be in attendance and actively participating in the discussion. Both the paper presentations and the workshops will direct attention to the relationship between Husserl and his predecessors, students and critics, including such influential figures as Stumpf, Brentano, Daubert, Reinach, Pfänder, Serrus, Stein, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Deleuze. The series of twelve papers and four workshops will explicitly address the following topics (among many others): the phenomenological account of personhood, reason as a socio-historical praxis, reason as a praxis of writing, the question of phenomenological language, the phenomenology of built-space and architecture, decision and the temporality of noema, the unity of time, and whole-parts friction.

It is the hope of the organizers of this conference-workshop that it will provide a model for, and constitute the springboard for the development of, an annual two- to four-week workshop-seminar, to be held every year in Canada, offering graduate-level one-credit courses in Husserl and the Phenomenological Tradition. Many of our colleagues across Canada have already expressed interest in this possibility, so this event could well inaugurate a new Phenomenological Spring in North America.

There is no registration fee for this event, but if you are hoping or planning to attend, please do inform one of the organizers, so that we might be able to prepare as best as possible. We would also be happy to assist you with travel arrangements etc.:
