The Uehiro Graduate Student Philosophy Conference showcases exceptional work by graduate and advanced undergraduate students in all fields of philosophy. A limited number of travel awards will be available to support presenters.
The purpose of the 2020 edition is to re-examine philosophical approaches to the environment viewed as biome, space of life, source of goods, and realm of interaction. Environmentalism is one of the key concerns of our era. The degradation of the environment directly affects the well-being and survival of both human and non-human species. For this reason, questions about the environment are often moral in kind. Although recent works on environmental ethics have been essential, they by no means demarcate the limit of philosophical inquiry about the environment. This conference is designed to overcome both singular cultural focus and limitations of scope by bringing into dialogue varied perspectives and diverse geographical, historical, cultural and philosophical backgrounds. Questions of interest include, but are not limited to: How does the environment bear on the formation and maintenance of power structures? How do our interactions with nature inform our ideas of art and beauty? Does the landscape affect language and interpersonal communication? What are the boundaries between wilderness and artifice; the bridges between human beings and nature? What can the natural world tell us about health, both mental and physical? How does the land relate to conceptions of self and identity? What duties do individuals and cultures have concerning their natural surroundings?
Submissions are welcome on environmental philosophy, environmental ethics (the moral standing of the environment, plants, & animals), feminist environmental ethics, naturalism & normativity, aesthetics of the environment, climate change, ideology & politics of the environment, the economy & the environment, land and self-concept formation, place & identity, ecology, biodiversity, the wilderness, comparative philosophy & the environment, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural studies on the environment, and related subjects.
